Barely a week has passed since reviewers from the western part of the world started complaining that their units of the next-generation Samsung Galaxy Fold were malfunctioning, particularly affecting the display.

The issues ranged from the display failing due to pulling out of the screen-protector-looking layer that apparently should not be removed to debris finding its way under the screen and the hinges failing thus affecting the display.

Last week, Samsung issued a statement saying that they had received “a few reports regarding the main display on the samples provided”. Samsung did acknowledge that there were faults with some of the units that they had issued to the press. From their statement, the company would “thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the matter.”

At that time, the company has very confident that the Fold’s launch date would remain the 26th of April but this was not to be so. In a new statement released by Samsung, the launch date of the Galaxy Fold has been postponed indefinitely, or as Samsung says, they will announce a new release date for the Galaxy Fold “in the coming weeks”.

“While many reviewers shared with us the vast potential they see, some also showed us how the device needs further improvements that could ensure the best possible user experience. To fully evaluate this feedback and run further internal tests, we have decided to delay the release of the Galaxy Fold. We plan to announce the release date in the coming weeks,” reads part of the statement.

The statement goes further to explain that preliminary inspections show that the issues with the Fold’s main display came about from “impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the hinge”. Samsung then commits to taking measures to strengthen the display.

Following this, the company also recalled all review units of the Galaxy Fold that were on the hands of reviewers, “the launch has been delayed whilst we uncover the underlying factors to the few devices that malfunctioned. In order that we check all devices, we are recalling all review samples,” said Samsung confirming the recall to GSM Arena.

Here’s Samsung’s full statement:

We recently unveiled a completely new mobile category: a smartphone using multiple new technologies and materials to create a display that is flexible enough to fold. We are encouraged by the excitement around the Galaxy Fold.

While many reviewers shared with us the vast potential they see, some also showed us how the device needs further improvements that could ensure the best possible user experience.

To fully evaluate this feedback and run further internal tests, we have decided to delay the release of the Galaxy Fold. We plan to announce the release date in the coming weeks.

Initial findings from the inspection of reported issues on the display showed that they could be associated with impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the hinge. There was also an instance where substances found inside the device affected the display performance.

We will take measures to strengthen the display protection. We will also enhance the guidance on care and use of the display including the protective layer so that our customers get the most out of their Galaxy Fold.

We value the trust our customers place in us and they are always our top priority. Samsung is committed to working closely with customers and partners to move the industry forward. We want to thank them for their patience and understanding.
