Kenyan General Elections 2022

Yes, now you can de-register yourself with the click of a button from any political party membership. It was around June last year when Kenyans on social media uncovered a gross violation of their data protection rights. Most were registered as members of political parties without their consent or even the slightest of knowledge. Actually, some are still illegally registered not knowing how to de-register. You can check if you are one of those with the steps in this earlier article.

At the time, after receiving many complaints in a matter of days from Kenyans, no reasonable resolution was offered. The Office of the Data Commissioner did not conduct legal follow-up on the breach of data privacy, neither did the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.

Additionally, political parties did not issue a statement regarding the issue. Unsurprisingly so.

Luckily, you can now deregister yourself from any political party in case it was done without consent. This is a process available on the eCitizen portal, which means you must have registered an account first.

Here are the easy de-registration steps:

  1. Login to your eCitizen account.
  2. Select Office of The Registrar of Political Parties
  3. Select Political Party Membership Resignation
  4. Click on resignation reasons
  5. Choose erroneously registered
  6. Press preview
  7. Press complete
