HMD Global, Birthplace of Nokia, to Unleash Their Own Smartphone Brand

HMD Global, Nokia

HMD Global, the Finnish tech company renowned for its Nokia-branded smartphones, has unveiled its intentions to introduce a new line of mobile devices. CEO Jean-Francois Baril made the announcement via Linkedin on Monday. The announcement detailed plans to expand their product range under a new HMD brand. This brand will run alongside their existing Nokia phones and upcoming collaborations with partners.

HMD Global To Manufacture New Phones

I am thrilled to announce a significant milestone in HMD’s evolution – we are establishing an original HMD brand. You can expect to see a new portfolio of HMD branded mobile devices, as well as Nokia devices and collaboration with exciting new partners. –

Jean-Francois Baril, CEO

Baril is excited about this new journey, moving forward from being ‘HMD – the home of Nokia phones to entering the market independently. Their goal is to revolutionize telecommunications. The release date for the new smartphone brand is still unknown. They however note that the phones will be of good quality and they will also pioneer manufacturing in Europe.

HMD Global emerged after Microsoft let go of the Nokia brand in 2016. Foxconn, led by Terry Gou, took over Microsoft’s feature phone business. They currently manufacture Nokia-branded devices, making it likely for them to produce the upcoming HMD-branded products too.

The Future of HMD Products

Nokia-branded phones, like the Nokia C32 released by HMD, have usually been in the budget-to-mid-tier category. Future HMD-branded devices are expected to follow suit. Baril underlines their commitment to designing for a sustainable and affordable future. While Foxconn will handle manufacturing, HMD Global Oy, based in Espoo and led by former Nokia executives, sees this as an opportunity to revive the brand’s legacy under a new name.
