Oookla Internet Rankings and Performance Report; Airtel Unmatched
Mobile Internet
Kenya ranked 109 globally in mobile internet connectivity. The position is informed by the following averages;
- 16.33Mbps download speeds
- 8.45Mbps upload speeds
- 29ms in latency (a measure of delay)
In mobile operator performance, providers are also ranked in different categories depending on how they performed on modern chipsets. Safaricom tops the speed score with the fastest internet followed closely by Airtel, and at a distant third is Telkom.
However, the script changes with Airtel topping the rest of the categories. Airtel users experienced the lowest delays and the most consistent mobile internet experience with their upload and download speeds.
An analysis of download speed performance on some of the fastest phones in Kenya demonstrated the iPhone 12 Pro Max 5G is king.
Fixed Broadband
Kenya finished the 2021 year at position 153 globally in fixed broadband internet. Faiba was the fastest provider here, a lead it held consistently through the year. In second place is Access Kenya and Safaricom comes in third.
Additionally, Faiba also had the lowest latency and the most consistent internet experience. Ookla reports 52.0% of results showing Faiba has at least a 25 Mbps minimum download speed and 3 Mbps minimum upload speed.
Meanwhile, Mombasa maintained its lead amongst Kenya’s populous cities in a different ranking. It is the one with the fastest mean download speeds for both mobile and fixed internet.
