Huawei’s push in the budget segment has been aggressive since the beginning of the year and it does not seem like the company is about to hit the brakes. Before the dust settles on the much-hyped Huawei P30 Lite, the company is gearing up to launch yet another device, this time around at a much more friendlier price point.
The Huawei Y5 (2019) sits below the Y6 Prime (2019) and aside from shedding some weight in price and specifications, it also sheds off the “Prime” branding. We’re not sure what this means for the rest of Huawei’s lineup, my hope is that they will not go the Nokia way and confuse consumers with a weird naming scheme.
The Y5 is an entry-level smartphone whose predecessor launched last year in July. At that time, the device cost 10,000 shillings and Huawei might just decide to keep the price of the phone around this figure. On the Y5 (2019) we expect to see some specs bump including a bigger display, better processor and a newer design that is reminiscent of the Huawei Y6 Prime (2019).

Price Guess Campaign
The company has not confirmed when the device will officially launch in the country but there’s an ongoing price guess campaign that is set to run for 7 days, from 9th May to 13th May, which means the device will launch after this period.
Huawei Mobile Kenya VP, Steven Li, says that Huawei’s push in Kenya is fuelled by a high demand by consumers for budget devices. During the price guess campaign, the winners will walk away with various gift hampers including a Huawei Y5 (2019) up for grabs.

The price-guess campaign is a smart move for a budget phone — it turns a spec sheet into something people actually talk about before launch. Huawei’s aggressive budget push this year makes the Y5 (2019) feel less like an afterthought and more like a volume play. When I want a break from spec-watching, I usually hop into a round of bluffing at mimicparty.me, which scratches a very different itch than phone launches.
