Showmax Vs DStv in Kenya- Which One Should You Get?

Showmax

MultiChoice has consistently maintained a lead in providing and streaming content in Kenya for decades. Now, with DStv and Showmax, users are covered for most of their entertainment needs. While DStv and Showmax share most content, there are differences that separate one from the other. Here is what you need to know as you decide on which platform to pick.

Showmax Vs DStv in Kenya- Which One Should You Get?

Showmax is an internet TV streaming service that is accessible on internet-connected devices like tablets, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, media players, and smart TVs.

Anyone can sign up for Showmax–you don’t have to have DStv to use it.

DStv customers can also watch Showmax on their TVs via an internet-connected DStv Explora.  DStv Premium customers get Showmax bundled in with the cost of their Premium subscription. This means they get unlimited access to the massive catalogue of movies, series, kids’ shows and documentaries on Showmax at zero extra cost.

Subscribers with all other DStv subscriptions – Compact, Compact Plus, Access and Family – get Showmax for a 50% discount.

Showmax Pro Vs DStv Premium

Showmax has an enhanced version of its streaming service called Showmax Pro. It offers a selection of live sport, music channels and news, as well as the existing movies and series offered by Showmax.

The Showmax Pro package has two forms, the normal one going for KES 2100 and a Pro Mobile form going for KES 1050. DStv Premium costs KES 8,900. There are currently no special deals for DStv subscribers on any package for Showmax Pro or Showmax Pro Mobile.

Both Showmax Pro and DStv Premium offer a large selection of sport-related content apart from live games. While Showmax Pro is much cheaper, the selection of sport on Showmax Pro is not as extensive as that of DStv Premium.

These is the range of sport you currently get on Showmax Pro:

  • Football: English Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, FA Cup, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Europa Conference League, Premier Soccer League and more
  • Motorsport: MotoGP, Dakar Rally, NASCAR Cup and more
  • Tennis: All Grand Slams and ATP Tour events
  • Athletics: Diamond League, World Challenge League and more
  • Running: Berlin, Boston, London, NYC, Soweto Marathons and more
  • Cycling: Tour De France, World Tour events and more
  • Boxing: Selected IBF, WBA, WBO, WBC and African Boxing events
  • Other: Triathlon, Gymnastics and Squash

DStv Premium has the above and much more of live sports, commentary and magazine shows. These include golf tours, cricket series and Formula one. Most sports lovers would find themselves well covered by the content on Showmx Pro. However, if you are a fan of a few of the other sports, it could be disappointing to miss out on them.

Not So Tough A Choice

Looking at that price gap though, I have to say Showmax Pro takes the win. Although multichoice is shy to cannibalize its own products, they are constantly adding new, exciting events to their Showmax Pro catalogue. This means soon, most, if not all, of the content on DStv will be available through Showmax Pro.

So, KES 2100 Vs KES 8900 for almost similar content? Easy decision.
