Canon announced the Canon 1DX MKIII, successor to the 1DXMarkII at CES 2020 and photographers and content creators couldn’t be happier. Canon says that the camera was built, engineered and designed based on feedback from professional sports, photojournalists, event and wedding photographers.
Let’s Talk Specs
At the base, we have a 20.1-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with new detail high detail low pass filters. This basically produces higher resolution, better image quality at a high ISO. This means that the ISO ranges from 100-51200 and expandable to 819200. 819200!!!
In terms of speed, the camera can fire off 16 frames per sec while using the viewfinder. Switching to live view takes that frame rate up to 20fps.
Space on space on space!
The camera’s buffer can hold up to 1000 raw+jpeg images when using the dual card slots. This takes up about 512GB. (2 256GB CFexpress cards).
The viewfinder AF system has been updated with 155 cross-type points using deep learning technology. There are 3869 manually selectable AF positions and 525 automatic areas. The system now supports face, head and most notably, eye detection. According to Canon, eye detection provides precision tracking by locking in on and following the eye of a moving object.
Video Quality Is Insane
On the video front, the Canon 1DX MKIII boasts a myriad of recording modes. The most significant would be 5.5K raw video recording and oversampling 4K 60p video recording. Of course, that’s just a pale comparison to the 30 other video formats this camera has to offer.
Ports and Features
The ports include a microphone jack, remote port, headphone jack, mini HDMI port, Ethernet port and the two SD card slots. It also supports Wifi and Bluetooth functionalities. The Canon 1DX MKIII also features a touch screen LCD panel! Other features include face priority metering, Digital lens optimizer built-in GPS and dust/weather resistance.
Canon 1DXMKIII Price Tag
This beast will be available in mid-February 2020 bundled with a SanDisk 64GB CFExpress card and reader with a price tag of Kes 650,000. So more than half a million on a camera. Sounds crazy but for what you’re getting, the Canon 1DX MKIII is worth the price. When the camera is out, we’ll update the article with more information.
