The existence of battle royal games like PUBG and Call Of Duty as mobile versions might be one of the best things to grace the world mobile gaming. But one particular game, Fortnite has not been as available as the former two which is one the public has demanded for years now. Yes, the game’s mobile version may be available for iOS users and owners of Samsung Galaxy devices. But the majority of the population that actually don’t use any of the two still don’t have it to this day.

But recent times have seen rumours running around of Fortnite finally fully coming to Android through the Google Play Store. This came mainly through a report from 9to5Google claiming that the game’s developers, Epic, was planning to submit the game officially to Google. This is alongside a request for a special exemption that would allow it to bypass the 30% cut on all in-app transactions.

We have asked that Google not enforce its publicly stated expectation that products distributed through Google Play use Google’s payment service for an in-app purchase. We believe this form of tying of mandatory payment service with a 30% fee is illegal in the case of a distribution platform with over 50% market share.

Fortnite, as a free-to-play game, makes all of its money through such transactions, including for cosmetic items and its seasonal battle pass subscription service.

But the latter request from Epic seems to have rubbed Google the wrong way. Just yesterday, Google did confirm that Epic has not asked for such an exemption from Apple, which raises the question of why it should be asked from them instead.

Fortnite has been available in the iOS App Store since last year where Epic has presumably paid the company’s standard 30% cut.

Additionally, Google cites the Play Store’s ability to promote apps and drive discovery, provide security and hosting, and provide technical testing and analytics tools as all reasons why its 30% cut is necessary.

So as much speculation keeps rotating all through, it is clear that Fortnite is not likely to fully come to Android devices until all these financial differences are settled with Google. Either way, we would really love to finally play Fortnite on our smartphones.
