Fast Charging Damage

Technology has in recent years been getting better and better and with that comes a lot of worries about battery health.  Fast charging is a convenient way of recharging your phone’s battery provided that your device supports it. Oh and also, if you have a charger that can output the wattage.

As of 2022, the fastest charger in the market is from OPPO which supports charging speeds of up to 150W. This means that the phone can charge from 0 to 100% in just 15 minutes. With such crazy charging speeds,  the question is will it have an effect on your battery in the long run?

Can Fast Charging Damage Your Battery?

The best way to answer this question is by explaining how fast charging works. Most modern phones use lithium-ion batteries. Fast charging of a battery happens in 3 phases.

The first phase applies a blast of voltage to the empty or almost empty battery. This gives you a blazing charge of from 50 to 70% in approximately 30 minutes. In the second phase, the energy absolved by the phone slows down to avoid overheating and charges up to 85%. In the last phase, the charging speeds slow down t around 5 watts until the phone fully charges.

Fast Charging

The one major thing that could destroy your phone battery during fast charging is the heat produced during the process. However, companies have come up with ways of minimizing the heat during fast charging.

How Companies Are Minimising Heat During Fast Charging

One way they reduce the heat is by managing the heat on the charging brick itself. This helps to keep the majority of the heat in the brick itself and not pass it to the battery.

Another way is by splitting the phone battery into 2 smaller battery packs. This helps by splitting the amount of voltage from the charging brick into both batteries instead of pumping it into one.

The last way of reducing heat during fast charging is by adding cooling fans to the phone. This method is mostly used by gaming phones and its main downside is that it makes the phone thicker.

Therefore, the simple answer to whether fast charging is harmful to your phone battery is ‘NO’. As long as heat is well managed during charging, then fast charging is not harmful.
