Oppo brings to light another addition to its Find X Series, The OPPO Find X5. This flagship boasts an ultra-premium finish, with frosted, matte glass and fingerprint-resistant chassis. The device has a recommended retail price of KES 99,999 for the 8GB RAM model with 256GB Storage.

So, why is Oppo Find X5 so expensive, and will it find customers in Kenya at that price tag?

From an aesthetic point of view, The Find X5 elevates the Find X series to a whole new level of beauty.  The fine grain of its 90% frosted texture creates a beautiful, almost silky luster that plays with light and feels incredible in the hand. The whole body is made of glass with a metal chassis.

However, at 100K, beauty cannot be the only thing that cuts it. At that amount, I am easily in the price-range to grab me a flagship in the Samsung Galaxy S series. Additionally, I find that few users in an emerging market like Kenya care for the aesthetics. I mean, see how many of us are walking around with ugly covers (sorry), on premium and good looking devices.

So, how does it score in terms of capabilities?

The Find X5 runs Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Mobile Platform. The Snapdragon 888 may not be the latest, but it’s still among the greatest. Snapdragon 888 chip is one of Qualcomm’s high-end chips. Some of the phones that run on this chip include the Samsung Galaxy S21 series and Xiaomi’s Mi 11 series.

It seems the Find X5 does score well on processing power then. A Snapdragon 888 phone is a good option for you if you’re a power user. They usually pair these devices with loads of RAM to handle just about any task. Therefore, the Find X5 8GB RAM model will provide a seamless experience.

Enhanced with the 1 Billion Colour Bionic Display, the phone uses a 120Hz Adaptive Dynamic Refresh Rate. This lets you enjoy smooth colour transitions. The phone boasts a 4,800mAh battery that can support an entire day of use. The Find X5 also comes with super-fast charging that supports 80W SuperVOOC plus 30W AirVOOC (wireless charging). So no qualms here.

This flagship introduces an advanced camera system powered by MariSilicon X that supports 4K Ultra Night Video capabilities. MariSilicon X marks a new era in computational photography, with its huge leap in both performance and power efficiency. A dual flagship IMX766 camera system, unparalleled performance and ultra-fast 5G connectivity complements this.

Market Reception

It is clear, the Find X5 really puts OPPO at the forefront of smartphone technology. When I first heard of the price tag on this device, I was so sure it was not worth it for the features it has. However, its clear I was wrong.

Even when comparing it with a few featurs in the Samsung S21 from last year, the Oppo Find X5 edges it out.

The Oppo phone is brimming with industry-leading features and offers a futuristic style. It delivers clean, modern sophistication and world-first imaging experiences.

This is a good phone, but the timing is wrong for the Kenyan market. Personally, I would pump up my pockets a bit and get an iPhone 12 or later for the faster bionic chip. My view might change if they use the latest Qualcomm chip for the next flagship. Ooh yeah, also if/when Oppo gives me this device to take it on a real test and comparison.

However, it is good to see Oppo’s effort at breaking in to the high-end market in Kenya. Provided they already have us on lock at the mid-range segment with the Reno series, they can pose competition to Apple and Samsung.

But not now Oppo, innovate some more. Allow us to acclimatize eey?
