Apple finally took the wraps off the iPhone 11. As expected, we get three variants of the device, and without a surprise, the naming scheme got a little weird.

We now have the iPhone 11 (which replaces the iPhone XR), then the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. Let’s take a look at what they have to offer:

iPhone 11

At the bottom of the pyramid, we have the default iPhone 11. We call this one the default because it’s most likely the one a good number of people will opt for. At $699, the new iPhone 11 has everything users need on an iPhone without needing them to churn out a whole $1000 for a phone.

The iPhone 11 comes with a similar design to last year’s iPhones (they all do), with the big change being in the cameras. It’s not just the design of the lenses at the back of the phone but we also get significant performance improvements on the same.

There’s better portrait mode output which now works on pets and Apple has also included a Night Mode that literally allows users to see at night thanks to camera tricks that we’ve seen before on some other flagship devices.

There’s also a new camera trick on the selfie camera with something Apple is cheesily calling Slofies, which is basically slow-mo selfie videos.

The size of the phone is manageable at 6.1-inches with a glass on glass design as all other iPhones in the lineup. Some other changes that we get include better water resistance which is great and there are now more colours to choose from, including; purple, white, green, yellow, black and red.

iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max

So, you are probably wondering why the Pro branding, right? Well, it’s all in the cameras really. While the design of the new iPhones looks pretty similar to last year’s devices, the biggest change comes in the cameras.

Like the iPhone 11, the iPhone 11 Pro has made great strides in improving its camera performance. Starting with the physical arrangement of the cameras on the device, followed by the addition of a third camera lens.

Both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro feature three cameras at the back; a 12MP wide-angle lens, a 12MP ultra-wide angle lens and a 12MP telephoto lens. The magic comes to life when taking photos as Apple demoed some really impressive tricks that users can perform, including dark mode as earlier mentioned.

The video department is where we really see the pro value. Apple is fronting the iPhone 11 Pro as a worthy alternative to a full DSLR camera with all its tricks up its sleeves. Through a partnership with Filmic pro (a professional video app), the new iPhone 11 Pro can record video using two cameras at the same time to give better immersion and detail.

The process is more complicated than we are putting it but all you need to know is that these new iPhones give more reason to Apple fanboys to call out Androids and their terrible video quality.

The other improvements on the Pro devices are similar to what we get on the standard iPhone 11 – more reason to save some cash and go for that one. Oh yeah, the devices apparently offer up to 5 hours longer battery life than last year’s iPhones (that’s how Apple reports their battery capacity)

As for pricing, the iPhone 11 Pro will start at $999, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max starts at $1099.
