We are tired of reporting on Android malware and just like us, we know you’re tired of reading on Android malware but as it goes, these things happen and we now have to do damage control.

According to a report by Trend Micro, a total of 85 android apps which had been downloaded over 8 million times featured hi-tech adware injection that employed several techniques to avoid detection.

The apps, which spanned across photography apps and mobile games, did perform the tasks that they were downloaded for, however, they served users with annoying ads at the same time making it difficult to uninstall them.

These apps, once installed, would wait for 30 minutes to elapse before their unscrupulous ways would kick in. After the elapsed time, the app would hide its icon from the app drawer and then create a shortcut on the home screen (as a measure to prevent the users from easily uninstalling the app).

After all the conditions are met, including checking if the device is unlocked, the app would then push full screen ads to the user at intervals of 5 minutes with no way of exiting the ad until it’s complete. To ensure there ads are not repeated a lot, these apps included code that would check how many times an ad has been shown and once the threshold is reached, it would load a new ad.
