The biggest problem with Android has always been software updates, so bad is the issue that Google actually stopped reporting on the Android distribution figures a while back. One company that is not following the trends of Android OEMs is HMD Global the bearers of Nokia branding on mobile phones.

HMD has just announced the rollout of Android 9.0 Pie, the latest software version from Google, to their two-year-old Nokia 6. The device which was launched back in 2017 was initially running on Android 7.1.1 and later went on to be updated to Android 8.0 Oreo then Android 8.1 last year.

The decision to update the Nokia 6 is much welcome and it proves the company’s commitment to their 2-year dedicated software support as HMD’s Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas put it:

The update is around 1.7GB heavy but the size could decrease slightly depending on the region you are in. On top of the Android Pie update, HMD has also bundled the February security update with the update.

Hats off to HMD for paying attention to their mid-range devices and even their entry-level budget smartphones, something that other OEMs should learn to do. So far, HMD has updated quite a number of devices on their portfolio with a few remaining including; Nokia 5.1, Nokia 3.1, Nokia 2.1, Nokia 3 and Nokia 1, all of which HMD promised to seed out Android Pie updates before the end of April 2019.

The Nokia 6 update, like every other device update, is rolling out in stages meaning it may take a few days before the rollout reaches your device but if you happen to have a Nokia 6 around, don’t get tired hitting that “check for updates” button.
