Since last October, Kenyan consumers have purchased 268,000 smartphones that were assembled locally. The consortium that produced the devices has sold 80% of the 330,000 phones assembled, indicating a high demand for such products in Kenya.
The East Africa Device Assembly Kenya Limited, also known as Eadak, is a joint venture between local telecom operators Safaricom and Jamii Telecom, Chinese phone manufacturer Telel, and the Industrial Technology Training Company Limited. The factory has the capacity to produce up to three million mobile phones each year. In the future, the company plans to expand into local manufacturing of computer hardware and software as well.
The government’s digital literacy program features the Neon Smarta, which boasts a 5-inch display, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of ROM, and 4G LTE. The factory where the devices are assembled locally is situated within Konza Technopolis and retailing the device between the price range of Kes 8000 to 9000.
