Kisumu county has carried out a mapping exercise to assign homes, businesses, and social amenities online addresses. The project is in partnership with Google through Google Plus Codes.
A Plus Code is a simple code comprising letters, and numerals combined with a location. They are like street addresses for people or places that don’t have one. With a Plus Code, people can receive deliveries, access emergency and social services, or just help other people find them.
The first phase in Kisumu is complete, a comprehensive system for finding properties around the city. According to reports, there had been 22,000 buildings identified and tagged on the map platform of the search engine.
“The unique address system uses Google Plus Codes and makes it easy for anyone with an Android device to navigate the city and find the accurate location for places that don’t have streets or roads,” Jacqueline Rajuai, Plus Code solutions and market.
The second phase is starting next month, and the aim is to cover 60,000 more properties in Kisumu.
“We are also seeking the partnership of e-economy and other courier companies to be able to easily deliver their products to customers,”Ms Rajuai.
Google had extended the programme to Mbale, Luanda, Majengo, Mudete and Chavakali in Vihiga County, where it had mapped 20,000 addresses.
