This statement was made by Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, during the opening of a four-day workshop in Abuja on the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.

The workshop’s theme was developing a high-level strategy and implementing a national AI strategy for Nigeria. In his remarks, Tijani noted that digital technology is already a reality in Asia, America and Europe. It emphasized that Nigeria and the rest of Africa must follow suit to keep up with global progress.

While stating the importance of the country’s active participation in the global development of artificial intelligence, the minister emphasized that Nigeria cannot afford to remain a few steps behind other nations. He called for strategies that will enable the country maximize the potential of AI to accelerate technological development and improve the lives of citizens.

Tijani commended the program sponsors and other development partners for their contributions to the development of AI in Nigeria. He emphasized that the country should be a leader in the integration of AI across Africa.

The workshop is expected to make important decisions and strategies to further the adoption and utilization of AI in the country. This approach is critical as it will enable Nigeria to leverage its diversity and experience to create an inclusive strategy that reflects the national consensus.
