Game of Thrones (GOT) is a show that has united people almost as much as the world cup does. The show, which is in its final season has amassed a huge following thanks to its storyline of a series of violent dynastic struggles among noble families set in the fictional Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and the continent of Essos – in short, there’s a lot of drama, nudity and violence which excites people.
Well, these fans have been loyal and happy over the past seven seasons but the last season hasn’t exactly been what people expected. The show is based on George RR Martin’s books, which unfortunately does not cover season 8, thus, the writers had to get creative and this is the route of the complaints.
Game of Thrones season 8 has been the worst rated season of the show with episodes 3, 4 and 5 being rated the worst of the worst in this season. Reason for this? GOT fans feel that the current writers have strayed away from the original narrative thus losing grip on the storyline and characters. Apparently, this final season seems rushed with writers struggling to fit so many plots that lack logic into it.
In a show of solidarity, GOT fans have now launched a petition on Change.org that had close to 800,000 digital signatures by the time of going to press. The petition, launched by Dylan D, seeks to have HBO “remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers”.
“David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on. This series deserves a final season that makes sense,” he writes.
Those who have already signed the petition agree with Dylan and all have expressed their disappointment with the final season of the show. “7 years of character development. 7 years of hyping up a huge enemy. All thrown out the window. Disgusting,” writes one petitioner, “I, unfortunately, I had to watch this shit to know it needs redoing,” writes another.
This petition might never amount to anything but with the target of 1,000,000 signatures almost being closed, HBO might not remake the final season of Game of Thrones but the message will be home; “…this final season has been mediocre at best and this once great show deserved a better send off than what Dumb and Dumber are giving us after making us wait 2 years,” – Brayden McCallum, one of the petitioners.
