SpaceX’s Starlink internet-from-space service will now be available to people on the go.
The new compact, DC-powered Starlink Mini is approximately the size of a thick laptop and integrates the Wi-Fi router inside the dish. Despite using less power than other Starlink terminals, it can still deliver speeds of over 100Mbps.
It’s worth noting that the Mini kit only consumes an average of 20-40W, compared to the 33-62W measured just two years ago with a Standard Actuated dish and a separate AC-powered Wi-Fi router. It requires a USB-C PD power source with a minimum rating of 100W (20V/5A).
The Mini dish dimensions are 11.75 x 10.2 x 1.45 inches (298.5 x 259 x 38.5mm) and weigh only 2.43 pounds (1.1kg). With the 49.2 foot (15m) DC power cable and kickstand, the total weight is 3.37 pounds (1.53kg). It has an IP67 rating, which means it is safeguarded against dust, rain, and short periods of water immersion.
Priced at $599, the Starlink Mini is a cost-effective solution for reliable internet access. While it’s $100 more than the standard dish, the additional $30 per month for the Mini Roam service is a small price to pay for up to 50GB of mobile data each month. Users can also choose to buy more data for just $1 per GB, as detailed in the early-access invitations sent to some existing US Starlink customers.
The Starlink Mini is now available in the US, with plans for further expansion. However, it’s not just limited to the US. According to a Starlink support page, it’s already on sale in Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Panama. In these countries, it can be purchased with Mini Service or Mobile – Regional Service plans, with no data or speed caps when using the Mini. It’s important to note that in-motion and ocean use is not allowed, but SpaceX has announced plans to expand to more markets in the future.
